Let’s initiate English Language with knowing the history of English. English is basically a West German language that got its origin from the Anglo- Frisian and old Saxon dialects which were brought by German settlers to Britain from various parts of Germany, Denmark. Up to that spot, the native population has spoken the Celtic language Brythonic. The words ‘England’ and English are derived from the name of the tribe Angles. Initially, Old English (Englisc) was a diverse set of dialects incorporating in it the different origins of Great Britain.

Old English in the later stage was transformed under various influences. The first transformation was brought by the speakers of North Germanic language in the 8th and 9th centuries. Another revolution was by the speakers of the Romance language in the 11th century. Middle English was born by the linguistic shift following the Norman invasion.

Modern English including the works of William Shakespeare is came into light from about 1550 and served the colonies of the British Empire. As a result of the growth of the British Empire, English was adopted in North America, India, Africa, Australia and many other regions. With the advent of the time, English occupied a global recognition and came to be known as a “World Language”. Today, English is rather a language that is gripping several of cultures worldwide as it continues to grow and spread in almost all the parts of the globe. While it is not an official language in most countries, but it is presently the language most often taught as a foreign language.

The English language is composed of nouns (specific nouns, pronouns, proper nouns) verbs (transitive, modal, linking, and intransitive), adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, articles, and exclamations.

A large number of books, magazines, and newspapers written in English are available in many countries around the world, and English is the most commonly used language in the sciences and technology. In addition, it is the basic medium for communication between people around the world, as well as, it is language of modern times. It is also the language of computers that help to communicate with the people around the world through Internet technology and e-mail. Therefore, the importance of English as a language cannot be neglected in today’s era.
